The Edmonton Oilers made big moves on Monday morning, signing forward and team captain Connor McDavid, as well as defenseman Jake Walman to contract extensions. Mcdavid signs a two-year, $25 million deal, while Walman signs a seven-year, $49 million deal.
McDavid, 28, scored 26 goals and 100 points last season with the Oilers, and became the fourth-fastest player in NHL history to reach 1,000 career points. He also had seven goals and 33 points in the Stanley Cup playoffs. The bridge deal comes as a surprise to many, as he was expected to surpass Kirill Kaprizov’s record setting extension less than a week prior.
Walman, 29, was acquired by the Oilers at the 2025 NHL trade deadline from the San Jose Sharks. In his limited sample size, Walman put up one goal and eight points in 15 regular season games. In the playoffs, he had two goals and 10 points in 22 games, playing a big role in Edmonton’s second straight Stanley Cup Finals run.
Both of their extensions begin in the 2026/27 NHL season. McDavid’s deal expires in 2028, when he’s 31, while Walman expires in 2033 at 37.
