3 current NHL free agents that could be sneaky good acquisitions

We are now in the month of August, which is often a very slow time in the hockey world. Most teams have their roster plans for next season figured out, but there are some who still are trying to fill holes on their roster. Today, lets take a look at three current NHL free agents who could still make an impact with a team willing to take a chance on them.

Jack Roslovic, Forward

Jack Roslovic has quietly been a very underrated player in his career. Last season alone, he scored 22 goals for a Hurricanes team that made it all the way to the Eastern Conference Finals. That total tied a career high he previously set in 2022 with the Columbus Blue Jackets. In 526 career NHL games, Roslovic has scored 102 goals and 260 points. Roslovic is probably the highest coveted free agent left on the market, with many teams looking to add him to their forward core.

Victor Olofsson, Forward

The Golden Knights signed Victor Olofsson during the 2024 off-season, signing him to a one year deal after he spent the last six seasons in Buffalo. Olofsson did solidly, tallying 15 goals and 29 points in just 56 games during the 2025 season. During the playoffs, he played nine out of the 11 playoff games for Vegas, with two goals and four points during that time. He won’t exactly be a top-six contributor, but he is solid depth for teams that might need some extra scoring from the bottom six.

Matt Grzelcyk, Defenseman

After eight seasons with the Boston Bruins, Matt Grzelcyk signed a one year deal with the Pittsburgh Penguins during the 2024 off-season. In 2025, Grzelcyk put up a career high 40 points as a defenseman, as well as only 16 penalty minutes. The downside to Grzelcyk’s offensive breakout was his defence. It was the only season that he had a negative plus/minus rating, with a -6 on the season. Even then, that number isn’t terrible, and teams would likely be willing to look past it if it meant some extra defensive help.
