Hurricanes sign Jackson Blake to 8-year extension

The Carolina Hurricanes have announced that the team has signed forward Jackson Blake to an eight year contract extension worth over $45M. Normally, this would be an average annual value (AAV) of $5.63M, the Hurricanes deferred salary on his new contract, making the AAV closer to about $5.1M.

The announcement was unexpected, as Blake has played only 81 games in his career so far, posting 17 goals and 34 points in that span. He still had another year on his rookie contract, but the team opted to sign him now before the new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) takes effect next season. Once that happens, teams would no longer be able to defer salary on contracts, nor would they be able to sign anyone to an eight year deal. The Hurricanes are gambling that Blake continues to develop into the star forward the team is expecting him to.
